Study Shows Turmeric Can Reduce Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety

The article was originally published in Nutrition Insight

Arjuna Natural Extracts is targeting the European market with its BCM-95 Curcumin, an all-natural patented formulation of turmeric extract. This ingredient can help mitigate symptoms of depression and anxiety, according to a recent clinical study, further backed by nearly two dozen previous studies supporting the health benefits of BCM-95 Curcumin extract.
The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 56 individuals with major depressive disorder was published in June, 2014 by Adrian Lopresti, PhD, et al., of Murdoch University, Australia, in the peer-reviewed Journal of Affective Disorders 167(2014)368–375. Results showed that supplementation with BCM-95 Curcumin succeeded in reducing the overall symptoms of depression, functioning as an anxiolytic as well when taken over a period of 8 weeks. Greater efficacy from curcumin treatment was identified in a subgroup of individuals with atypical depression (common depression). There were no significant differences in the adverse events between BCM-95 and the placebo.
“Curcumin’s positive antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects are likely due to its ability to normalize specific physiological pathways,” says Lopresti. “It appears to elevate neurotransmitters such as serotonin, while lowering stress hormones, such as cortisol, and is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Curcumin also provides protection to the brain.”
Another important mechanism via which curcumin is thought to alleviate symptoms of depression is via its’ potent anti-inflammatory effects. Depression is increasingly believed to be an inflammatory condition, with the inflammatory chemicals being responsible for the symptoms.
Depression is a common, treatable disorder that continues to remain under detected globally. Health surveys indicate that major depression is experienced by 10-15% of people in their lifetime. Depression is caused by multiple factors and the success rate of current treatment is only 20-40%. Many treatments are associated with side effects from long-term use, including anxiety, thoughts of suicide, insomnia, weight gain and sexual dysfunction.
Curcumin works simultaneously on multiple pathways associated with depression. It is considered as the most promising therapeutic targets to treat depressive behavior.
BCM-95 curcumin is produced from non-GMO turmeric. It has been extensively researched by universities throughout the US, Australia, Japan and India in multiple clinical studies and has attained 12 international patents.
BCM- 95 curcumin is manufactured by synergistically combining curcumin and essential oil of turmeric, without synthetic additives. The therapeutic benefits of turmeric can be attained at its best by combining curcumin with ar-turmerone, an active compound derived from essential oil of turmeric. In BCM-95, this unique synergy forms a 95% bioactivity enhanced curcuminoid complex to create a highly bioactive turmeric extract with superior bioavailability.
Arjuna’s production processes and products meet market-specific regulations worldwide. A GMP-certified, SAP-driven company, Arjuna has achieved international certifications including ISO22000, Kosher and Halal. Arjuna continues to engage in research and development, with continuing scientific validation of its novel product line through advanced clinical studies.

Arjuna takes curcumin to the next level

The news was originally published in Nutraceutical Business Review

Arjuna Natural Extracts reports increasing sales of its leading brand, BCM-95 curcumin. Sales of the all-natural, patented formulation of turmeric extract rose globally by 20% in 2015 compared with 2014.

Google points to turmeric as a 'rising star' — ranked by volume of searches — in its food trends report for 2016. The interest in this functional ingredient grew by 56% from November to January this year alone. Consumers are turning to YouTube to learn about the benefits of turmeric — so much so that the top five educational videos on turmeric attracted a total nearly 4 million views.

DolCas Biotech, the US associate of Arjuna Natural Extracts, plays a significant role in steering the extensive research initiatives on curcumin, jointly funded by both the companies.

'Consumers already trust this ingredient and brand, and growing awareness of the health benefits of turmeric extracts spurred an increase in sales of BCM-95 of 20%,' explains Jomy Jose, Marketing Director for Arjuna.

'We also increased the production capacity by 20% to match this growing demand for BCM-95,' Jose notes, adding: 'While consumers are actively seeking information on turmeric, there is confusion in the market about curcumin absorption and oral bioavailability, Also, unsubstantiated claims by various 'rush-to-market' copycat turmeric products contributes to consumer insecurity.'

The main problem of curcumin is that it is not absorbed nor retained well in the blood. Many curcumin products add synthetic additives to solve this problem. Such additives can have a negative impact on the active ingredients’ purity and potency. In the cases of unregulated turmeric products, the additives themselves, as well as purity problems in general, could lead to potential health issues with long-term use.

'Any supplement you put into your body should be both safe and effective,' insists Benny Antony, PhD, Joint Managing Director for Arjuna. 'Arjuna’s curcumin is highly bioavailable thanks to the synergism between the curcumin and the compound ar-turmerone, an essential oil component of turmeric extract. Ar-turmerone concentrates in BCM95 synergistically combine with curcuminoids to reach the blood stream in unmodified — and thus more bioactive — form.'

The turmeric used for BCM-95 eliminates the chance of contamination. BCM-95 does not contain any pesticides and complies with the standards set by EU regulations. It also meets the new European 2015/1933 PAH regulation that sets maximum levels of PAHs in food supplements.

'There is a gap between consumer desire to use good-for-you curcumin and the offerings in the market,' adds Jose. 'This makes it harder for processors to develop a new supplement or functional food or beverage,' submits Jose. 'Arjuna has the expertise and technical staff to help product developers fill this gap

Arjuna Natural Extracts gets US patent on turmeric formulation

(This article was published on November 24, 2014 in, The Hindu BusinessLine and Economic Times in Hyderabad, Kochi and Bangalore)

In a significant development for Kerala-based Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd, it has received a patent in the United States on BCM-95, a turmeric extract formulation that could be used to target Alzheimer’s disease.

Explaining the application patent, Benny Antony, Joint Managing Director of the company said, the product is a re-blend of two ingredients in turmeric, but in a ratio that is not seen in naturally occurring turmeric. It is a reblend of curcuminoid and an essential oil of turmeric, he said.

India has in the past blocked efforts to patent naturally occurring turmeric and tulsi (basil) etc, and has even set up a digital traditional library to document known uses of these products. And the reason for that is because a patent gives the patent-holder a monopoly on the sale and manufacture of the product for a fixed period of time.

The BCM-95 product works as a preventive, Antony says, as it targets ß-amyloid, that is seen in large quantities in people with Alzheimer’s and is seen as one of the reasons for the disease.

BCM9 – a mixture of curcumin, the yellow colouring substance of turmeric and an essential oil from the spice – is already available in India. But it is sold as a supplement and does not make therapeutic claims.

The product has been peer-reviewed and is also being studied for various indications including arthritis, diabetes, depression, cancer prevention and treatment, adjutant with chemotherapy and cancer radiation, liver and gastro intestinal diseases etc, company officials said.

He said that the product has already undergone human clinical trials in patients with Alzheimer’s disease at Chinese University of Hong Kong and has found to be highly beneficial in arresting the progress of the disease. It is also undergoing two other human clinical trials in patients with Alzheimer’s disease and subjects at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in Australia.

According to him, there are several curcumin based products in the market now and BCM-95 ranks among the top selling products. The company is awaiting a European patent for the product. The Department of Biotechnology in India had sanctioned around ₹14 crore for a clinical study of BCM95 in the treatment of mouth cancer.

The company, a leading domestic manufacturer and exporter of botanical extracts, also applied for patent for the uses of amla extracts for reducing cholesterol, pomegranate extracts for treating heart disease and extracts of Boswsellia Serrata (Indian Frankincense) for prevention of arthritis and inflammation.

Kerala Agriculture University grants 60 lakhs to Arjuna for product development using ginger’s active ingredient.

While ginger is a pharmacologically important component in ginger, ginger has a slow content of gingerol. Curegarden parent company, Arjuna Natural Extract has been commissioned to develop high concentrate of gingerol extract through their scientific stabilization and purifying methods.

The Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has launched a project on Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode.It has signed a memorandum of understanding with private sector Arjuna Natural Extracts Limited for a project, ‘Metabolome analysis in ginger and product development using gingerol’.

Industrial feasibility

KAU Vice Chancellor P. Rajendran said the project was intended to take research findings to the industry. “Ginger has been used from time immemorial for therapeutic use. The KAU has developed several ginger varieties having high gingerol content. Gingerol being a pharmacologically important component in ginger with anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, gastro-protective, cardiotonic and anti-hepatotoxic qualities, these KAU varieties are very useful in development of medicines with organic base,” he added.

T.R. Gopalakrishnan, Director of Research, said the project proposed under the PPP mode was funded by the Biotechnology Industry Research Council of the Union Department of Biotechnology.

The project will be jointly implemented by the Centre for Plant Biotechnology and Molecular Biology of KAU and the Arjuna Natural Extracts Limited, an ISO 9001 and 2200 Company.

The duration of the project is expected to be three years. The total outlay was Rs.14.8 crore, he said. Benny Antony, Founder Director, Arjuna Natural Extracts Limited, said that gingerol content was a vital parameter in production of ginger-based medicinal preparations, but its international market remained largely untapped because of the low gingerol content in traditional cultivars and poor gingerol stability issues.

“The novel ginger cultivars of KAU with high gingerol content will help commercialise quality guaranteed stable ginger extract by developing a ginger extract powder with at least 6 per cent gingerol content. The project will develop methods to increase the stability of gingerols in the product, identify and purify individual gingerols, and establish the safety of the standardised ginger extract. We had earlier collaborated with research institutions in the U.S. and Australia,” he added.

‘Boon to farmers’

M.R. Shylaja, professor, who detected the industrial feasibility of new ginger varieties with high gingerol content developed by her, said this project would be a boon to ginger farmers as it would lead to ensuring buy-back guarantee at fair price.

Curegarden to launch ‘Rhulief balm’ – a unique patented formulation which helps relieve pain, arrests inflammation, and prevents joint degradation.

Curegarden launches a natural pain relieving balm which not only relieves pain but also stops joints from further degradation.

Curegarden has used Boswellia Serrata, in the formulation along with the essential oil of Boswellia. Boswellia is a tree gum resin that has multiple health benefits. Also known as Indian frankincense, it has been burned as incense in religious and cultural ceremonies for centuries. Boswellia is widely regarded as a potent anti-inflammatory nutrient, wherein its primary active ingredient, acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA), inhibits the inflammatory enzyme 5-lipoxygenase.

Rhulief balm contains the potent extract of the botanic Boswellia Serrata, blended with the essential oil of Boswellia to relieve pain and inflammation to prevent further joint damage. Boswellia, with its unique lipo oxygenase (LOX) inhibitory action, not only relieves pain, but arrests underlying inflammation to protect the joint from further damage.

What sets this balm apart from all the other balms in the market are two unique properties of boswellia; it stop further degradation of joints due to its anti-inflammatory properties and unlike all the NSAID’s in the market, Rhulief works on both pain pathways(COX,LOX), so it stops pain and relieves inflammation. The balm is all set to launch next month in Bangalore, it will be available online across India.

P.J. Kunjachan, a model entrepreneur with a modest beginning

A case study on Entrepreneur Development and Small Business Enterprises for an MBA course offered by Indira Gandhi National Open University lists three names as examples. The first two are anybody’s guess: Dhirubhai Ambani and Karsanbhai Patel.

The third person is from Kerala, a place not exactly known for entrepreneurship. In fact, P.J. Kunjachan, the Managing Director of Arjuna Natural Extracts Limited (ANEL), who was cited as a model entrepreneur, was surprised at the inclusion of his name.

“I came to know about it only when somebody showed it to me. They had not even contacted me,” Kunjachan said. He may not be known so well outside the world of spice extracts. The study describes him as a successful model entrepreneur, who started his career as a proofreader with a local vernacular daily and as a newspaper vendor, and rose to head a company targeting a turnover of Rs 100 crore this year. ANEL is the largest manufacturer of Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil in Asia and is now the producer of the world’s largest selling bio-available turmeric extract BCM-95™.

BCM-95™, developed by ANEL scientists, is sold as an antioxidant and has obtained six patents from the US and one from Japan; the European patent is pending. ANEL has bagged 11 international patents in all. Perhaps what sets Kunjachan apart from other entrepreneurs from Kerala, is his willingness to do something different for which he is prepared to spend time, money and effort. The discovery of Omega-3 fatty acids 10 years ago was the first milestone that gave the company a name.

The man who earned his spurs as a fragrant spice extractor began ironically with a nasty smelling substance. He set up a unit for producing bone meal from crushed bones to be used as organic manure. A thriving bone meal business led to a turning point. With the inspiration of his brother-in-law biochemist Dr. Benny Antony and brother Paul, he set up ANEL 20 years ago to export spice extracts. He then faced a series of challenges — first of which was the mopping up of resources because no bank was willing to fund the project. They pooled in Rs 3 lakh to begin operations.

They developed essential oil from mustard, an innovative product at that time. Though it was tough to export it to the US because it had been classified as hazardous, it was a runaway success. The first year saw them making a turnover of Rs 70 lakh with a profit of Rs 45 lakh. He enjoyed a stroke of luck in the form of rupee devaluation and the export income began to pour in.

Banks started chasing him after this success. The state tax department slapped a penalty for nonpayment of tax. But Kunjachan won an appeal against it because export turnover was not taxable then. The company hit the jackpot when it identified and separated Omega-3 fatty acids, a good source of antioxidants, from sardine oil. It is sold to big pharmaceutical companies who made products based on them.

ANEL later shifted its focus to research when it found that competition was tough in spice extract exports. While many companies spend 3-5 percent of their income on research, ANEL devotes 12 percent of its proceeds on development.

Kunjachan admits it was a challenge to identify the molecule that enhances bio-availability of curcumin in the body. BCM-95™ is seven times more bio-available than any other curcumin extract. It is unique because the extract is a reconstituted one, meaning it does not use foreign molecules.

Today, the company employs 300 people. It has a production unit in Kerala and two in Tamil Nadu and it plans to convert a closed factory in Kerala into an R&D lab. Its two subsidiaries, Livlong Nutraceuticals and Herbal Supplements, cater to foreign markets.

Kunjachan says the real architect of the company’s success story is his brother-in-law Dr. Benny Antony, who has inspired the staff to develop new products. “As an entrepreneur, one should always dream of success. Yes, problems will be there but every problem has a solution,” and that Kunjachan says, is his success mantra.
