There exist innumerable studies that enumerate turmeric’s health benefits and that of its most active compound – curcumin, the key ingredient that can be used for the treatment of several inflammatory conditions.
Now comes a new research that explains the important role that the essential oil of turmeric – Ar-turmerone plays in assisting the regeneration of brain cells in neurological diseases. The exciting new study ‘Aromatic-turmerone induces neural stem cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo’* was published in September 2014 in the journal of Stem Cell Research & Therapy.
The study revealed that when brain cells were exposed to Ar-turmerone, it resulted in an increase in the number of neural stem cells through proliferation. Moreover, these newly formed neural stem cells also increased the number of fully differentiated neuronal cells, indicating the occurrence of a healing effect. The same effect was replicated in the animal model, where rats injected with Ar-turmerone inside their brains demonstrated an increase in the proliferation of neural stem cells and in the creation of newly formed healthy brain cells.
