If you have an annoying skin rash that won’t go away despite all the moisturizing creams you apply, do not just discard it off as dry skin flakes. Visit your nearest dermatologist at the earliest, because you might be having psoriasis.

Psoriasis is one among the most notorious skin disorders, and could be really irritating. In this disorder, the epithelial cells on outer portion of the skin start multiplying 10 times faster than the usual rate. Because of this, the dead skin cells cannot be shed away and hence accumulate under this layer of plaque. Hence, the affected region has a raised appearance and is red or white in colour. The regions that are commonly affected are knees, elbows, scalp as well as other parts of the body.

Symptoms of this disease vary from one person to another on the basis of their skin types and the type of psoriasis they suffer. The most common symptoms include a red rash on the upper layer of the skin covered or encircled by white flakes. These regions are often itchy and may crack and bleed.

Sometimes the fingernails and toenails also get affected by this disorder resulting in the discoloration and breakage of nails. In extreme conditions, the nails may detach from the nail bed completely.

Psoriasis can affect the scalp and crusts are formed. This is often mistaken as dandruff.

Various types of Psoriasis

  • Psoriatic arthritis - In some cases, psoriasis can be associated with psoriatic arthritis which results in painful and swollen joints.
  • Pustular psoriasis – In this type of psoriasis, the skin becomes red and scaly with small pustules on the surface of the skin.
  • Guttate psoriasis – These appear as tiny red spots over the body in childhood and continue to remain even during adulthood. This may be triggered by respiratory infections, strep throat, tonsillitis, stress and injury to skin.
  • Inverse psoriasis – These are shiny red lesions that appear in the skin folds like armpits, under the breasts and in the groin area.
  • Erythrodermic psoriasis – This type of psoriasis results in periodic redness of skin and shedding of scales.

Causes of Psoriasis

A wide range of factors can be associated with this disease are emotional stress, trauma and infections. Moreover, the disease tends to run in families. With timely treatment, the effects of this disease can be reduced to a great extent.
