From our childhood days, we have always been forced to consume a lot of carrots in the form of raw carrots, salads or juices. The reason? Carrots keep our eyes healthy. Yes. This is a known fact as carrots are one of the richest sources of Vitamin A, which is responsible for maintaining healthy eyes. The deficiency of Vitamin A often leads to a condition called night blindness, which as the name suggests, is poor vision in the dark environments.

Vitamin A contains retinoids (from animal food sources) and carotenoids (from plant food sources), which are essential not only in maintain good vision, but also in building body immunity, cell development and skin health. Vitamin A also serves an an excellent antioxidant which helps in preventing cancer to some extent.

Vitamin A is found in the bright coloured fruits and vegetables and some forms of meat as well. Here is the list of Vitamin A rich food sources for you.

  • Carrots

Carrots are one of the best sources of Vitamin A. Instead of having it cooked or in any other forms, the best option is to consume it raw, as plain carrots, or salads. You can also consume it in the form of carrot juice to get a dash of Vitamin A.

  • Sweet Potato

Sprinkled with spices, this vegetable is a good substitute for potato, which provides mainly carbohydrates. Sweet potatoes, on the other hand, is a storehouse of both Vitamin A as well as carbohydrates in the right amount. They can be consumed as snacks, in the form of wedges or wafers, as well as in salads and soups.

  • Green Leafy Vegetables

The greens are rich in various vitamins and minerals that almost always, we have been scolded for not eating the leafy vegetables such as spinach and lettuce on our plate. The best idea is to consume them raw, because while cooking these leafy veggies, the nutrients present in them will seep out into the water used for cooking, and hence there would be no point in having them in your diet.

  • Pumpkin

This yellowish orange vegetable is a powerhouse of nutrients and when it comes to Vitamin A, it is an excellent source of carotenoids present in Vitamin A. You can have them as soups, pies and salads.

  • Liver

Though this meat would not be on your list of favourites, meat liver is a good source of Vitamin A. You can have this sliced and cooked, and add it yo your salads, or even make a snack out of it.

  • Milk

Milk is an excellent source of calcium as well as Vitamin A. A glass of milk everyday, with added flavours or not, should definitely be a part of your diet.
