Facts about the Common Cold

Posted on 25-01-17

The common cold gets its name from its commonness among people. Caused by a virus called Rhinovirus, this almost harmless virus affects the nose and upper respiratory tract, and makes the mucus glands in this region secrete more mucus than normal. Children are more susceptible to this disease than adults.

Symptoms of a common cold are primarily a runny or stuffy nose, low grade fever, fatigue, headache, sneezing, congestion and mild headache. Usually colds go by itself in about ten days or so. However, if it lasts longer, it would be suggested that you pay a visit to you family physician. During this period, if the mucus turns thicker with a yellow or greenish shade, it is completely normal.

As mentioned earlier, rhinovirus is responsible for this disease and may enter the body either through air, which carries the virus from the droplets of an infected person, especially when the infected person, sneezes or talks in front of the uninfected person.

Risk factors

  • Children are at greater risk of acquiring cold, especially because of their age and developing immunity.
  • For those who have a weakened immunity, especially after some disease, are more susceptible to the disease.
  • Certain seasons such as autumn and winter are commonly known as the “flu seasons” as these are those times of the year when people are more likely to catch a cold or develop a flu.

Common cold can lead to complications such as infections of the ear canal, asthma, acute sinusitis, and strep throat. All these are usually characterized by low grade fever and fatigue, and need to be consulted by a physician immediately.

The most effective treatment for common cold is the use of decongestant nasal sprays or saline water drops containing 0.001% of  salt in water. Other alternative treatments include consumption of foods rich in vitamin C such as oranges. Drink plenty of fluids such as water or juices to help in re-hydration. Gargle with a mix of salt and turmeric powder in lukewarm water to help ease the discomfort the cold has caused on your throat.
