Dry Skin and how to manage it

Posted on 23-02-17

Dry skin is usually caused by the lack of water in the outer layer of the skin, which is called the epidermis. Though it affects both the genders alike, older individuals are more susceptible to this skin disorder, which is also known as Xeroderma or Xerosic dermatitis.

Symptoms of dry skin includes skin tightness, red rashes and itching, which may last for a few days to weeks, depending on the severity of the condition. Besides lack of water, exposure to cold weather, harsh working conditions and certain medications can also cause dry skin. Most common areas affected are arms, hands and lower legs.

Besides harsh environmental conditions, genetics also play a key role in developing dry skin. When genetic factors are responsible for dry skin, the disorder is called Ichthyosis vulgaris. This disorder causes severe dryness and fish-like scaly skin. The more severe the condition gets, it is called Atopic dermatitis, and the skin turns into red colour and rashes appear on the skin.

The following medical conditions are also responsible for dry skin – hypothyroidism, diabetes, malnutrition, dermatitis.

The best treatment for dry skin is the application of moisturizers such as cetaphil lotion, lubriderm lotion, vaseline etc.

Dry skin can be prevented by drinking at least eight glasses of water per day, and by using mild soaps, cotton and natural fiber clothing. You can also observe your activities and see which of it triggers a dry skin attack. Natural remedies include topical application of aloe, tea tree oil and oatmeal baths to soothe itchy skin.

Dry skin, if left untreated, may result in serious skin disorders like psoriasis, eczema etc.
