Many people are not aware of what Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is, though around 1 in every 10 people suffers from it. RLS is a disorder associated with the nervous system that gives you the constant urge to move your legs restlessly, as the name itself states. This disorder is a sleep disorder as it often kills your sleep and leaves you tired all through the day.
The main symptom of this condition is an irritating, itchy, pins and needles feeling in the legs, which worsen while sitting or lying down. The severity of the symptoms could vary from person to person and ranges from mild to intolerable.
Restless Legs Syndrome affects both genders, irrespective of their age. The cause of RLS is unknown, and it is often associated with the genes. Other factors which may result in the development or the worsening of Restless Legs Syndrome include certain chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, peripheral neuropathy etc. RLS is also labelled as the side-effect of certain families of drugs which include anti-nausea drugs, anti-psychotic drugs, anti-depressants and anti-histamines.
Restless Legs Syndrome is usually treated with exercise programs, leg massages, improved sleeping habits and counselling sessions. However in severe cases, doctors may prescribe medications belonging to the family of dopamine’s, benzodiazepines and anti-convulsants.
